GARDENS

Hidden behind the walls of the Old Vicarage, our grounds extend for 1¼ acres. You will find them crammed full of shrubs and conifers.

You will see thousands of shrubs & conifers setting off our models, many treated with "Coarse Bonsai" to ensure they provide the perfect setting and backdrop.

Many of the models have their own miniature gardens, planted for resilience to surviving our 80,000+ visitors a year.

For example we have…
Prunus Cerasifera (Atropurpurea) Pissardii. (Pissards Plum). Planted with the original planting in 1952. During height of growing season pruned twice a week. Species originally discovered as a sport sometime before 1880 by Monsieur Pissard gardener to the Shah of Persia.

Cotoneaster Thymifdius. Planted 1973. Pruned 3 times a year with red show of both flower and fruit.

English "Elm" Ulmus Procera. Planted 1986 - cut with topiary shears every 4 - 6 weeks.

Cupressus Glubra "Gluca". Smooth Arizona Cypress. Striking blue foliage capable of growing 3 feet a year. Cut 3 times a year into clouds of growth.
