Samarkand

1 tall floppy Samarkand

Tall floppy sounds a bit demeaning, perhaps the technique which is called the dropped hanky has a better ring. The piece is blown like a cylinder with plenty of weight in the edge but quite slender in the neck area. To finish the piece it is got very hot and then spun out to a dish before swinging it down suddenly which causes the sides of the vase to fold. This is frowned upon by many craftsmen but I rather like the effect especially when the folds are free and easy.

2 Samarkand round vase

I have never been to Samarkand and might not like it when I got there but that doesn't stop it having a strong romantic pull. The camel trains across the desert the fine silks, aromatic oils and ungents. The pleasure dome of Kublai Kahn. Travelling the desert long nights and searing days are not my idea of fun but you cant resist the romance of it. I think I will read the poem again.

3 Samarkand round vase

Another roundish shape , there are so many possibilities, the spiral running down from the lip looks like a golden metal, in fact it si glass with a colour called irisgold. This colour because of its metallic can change so much depending on the atmosphere when it is heated. In a reduction atmosphere it turns silver and then gold.

4 Small flower vase

When you put your flowers in semi transparent glass like this little Samarkand piece there is so much more to enjoy because you can see the stems in the water.

5 Samarkand floppy bowl

We find bowls like this are great for tomatoes or small fruit or salad. So much of what I do is decorative but I am better pleased whe the glass can be used as well as enjoyed.
